Catalonian club, Girona delt Real Madrid a heavy blow when they came to the Santiago Bernabeu and peep the European Champions 2-1 on Sunday.
It was the fourth time (Laliga first leg and two-legged Copa Del Rey match up) bothsides will be facing this season and the game kicked off as early as 12pm in the Spanish capital.
Casemiro broke the deadlock in the first half after Toni Kroos put a perfect in-swinger to his head to put Santiago Solari’s side 1-0 up.
The first half ended with Los Blancos having all the chances they needed to put the game to bed but managed to squander everyone of them.
In the second half, Real Madrid’s momentum dropped and Girona took control of things. threatening to score with every attack they managed to engineer — The woodwork and Courtois were Real’s saving grace.
But the Spanish giants weren’t going to ride on luck for long after they dropped their foot off the pedal with substitues like Gareth Bale and Mariano coming to the fur.
Girona got awarded a penalty in the 65th minute. Sergio Ramos handled Luiz’s shot in the box just after Real’s defence were scrambling to clear a dangerous attack with Stuani hitting the bar earlier.
Girona’s highest goal scorer, Cristhian Stuani stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards. It was Stuani’s 13th league goal of the season and an equalizer the Catalan side had worked so hard for.
With 15 minutes left to play, Portu stabbed a dagger to the heart of the Madrid faithfuls with a darting header which went past a helpless Courtois in goal.
In Real’s quest for an equalizer, Sergio Ramos received his marching orders from the referee after accumulating two yellow cards in the game. The defender got an opportunity to attempt an acrobatic shot, but unfortunately, Girona’s Alcala also commited to the ball with his head and Ramos appeared to have caught him in the process.
Girona managed to hold on to their lead and put an end to Los Blancos’ run of 5 consecutive wins in Laliga.
A bitter end it was in what had started off as a promising league game for Solari’s moving train.
They have now dropped down to 3rd on the league table, after City rivals, Atletico Madrid beat Rayo Vallecano 1-0 on Saturday. Also Real are now 9 points within touch of league leaders, Barcelona.
