Rapper A$AP Rocky has been released from a Swedish jail
A BIT OF A BACK STORY – A$AP Rocky was arrested in Sweden three weeks ago and charged with assault on two people in Stockholm.
ASAP was in Sweden for a concert and was talking a around the city when he and his team were approached by two individuals who allegedly were asking for drugs and harassing women.
In a video posted by A$AP Rocky on the twitter, it showed him and his team being followed by two individuals and A$AP’s bodyguard could be heard saying to the men to go the other way and to stop following them. The individuals did not take heed and continued following in the same direction as A$AP and crew. Then a scuffle ensued between the bodyguard and one of the individuals who could be seen swinging at the security detail and then proceeding to throw his headphone at him. After things calmed down A$AP could be heard saying to the second individual who did not engage in the first scuffle “We don’t wanna fight y’all. We don’t wanna go to jail.”
In another part of the video you could also hear A$AP saying “just for the cameras, we don’t want no problems with these boys they keep following us” and also showed what appeared to be two individuals following them as demanding something which was not clear in the video but later during the court hearing was determined to be earphones that belonged to one of the individuals. Moments later we see one of individuals being attacked by A$AP Rocky’s security detail and some six seconds in A$AP appears to be Launching at another individual to the ground and he and his entourage began punching and kicking the downed man.
After the video went viral the Swedish police quickly moved in to arrest A$AP Rocky and his entourage after the rapper went to the police station voluntarily. He was detained for two weeks without bail as Sweden does not have a provision for bail in their legal system.
Being a celebrity this quickly became headline news around the world. Whilst he was in jail they were calls for his release as more artists and celebrities began the hashtag #JustforRocky.
This went as far reaching the white house where the president of the United States Donald Trump weighed in on the situation after word got to him via his wife the first lady and also Kanye and Kim West.
COURT HEARING – The prosecutors demanded an indictment of ASAP Rocky and also if convicted they demanded a six year prison term.
The back and forth continued for a week with the prosecution making revised statements about the details of the case. The Judge reused ASAP bail and the request by the prosecution and police to carry out more investigation whilst A$AP remained behind bars was unwarranted and violates A$AP’s humans rights says his lawyer.
After much deliberation and pressure from the US Government on Sweden, the judge said they would give a verdict on 14 August and also that ASAP Rocky was free to return to the united states pending the verdict. At the moment sources seem to think this would be a not guilty verdict but we wait to see.
