Just few days to the 2019 General elections, the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC) has mounted yet another giant broom in Abuja
They seem to be sprouting up everywhere in the Federal Capital CIty (FCT) like yams ready for harvest.
The first broom which is a symbol of the All Progressive Congress APC party, was installed in front of the Country’s city gate that symbolises the unity of Nigeria and had also raised a lot of dust as Nigerians took to different social media platforms to express their displeasure with the development.
Clearly the dust raised by citizens on social media still in the air of the internet space did not stop APC from once again planting another broom which was spotted inside the city area but a in smaller size this time around.
The recent installment was done in the unity foundation area which is located at the heart of Abuja central business district on the crossroad of two important axis – Transcorp Hilton Hotel and Millennium park, along the Shehu Shagari way with important structures like the federal secretariat, Eagle square, Federal ministries, Aso Rock Villa and the National Assembly, basically the center business hub of the capital territory.
It might be difficult to deny ownership of this broom as the image clearly shows an APC campaign banner around the square metal encasing of the giant broom.
The question remains, why is it of so much importance to have a symbol that represents a particular party in the areas of the Federal capital territory? Especially in a country that practices multi- party system of politics and Governance.
Would other parties be given an opportunity to be able to build a structure of their own party symbol?.
One thing is for sure, the installation of the brooms does not alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians or represent what the Country stands for, there is no historical momentum behind the broom nor does it represent any cultural significance of Nigerians.
Another political stunt by the ruling party to garner support before the elections on 16 February 2019.
Hitvibz reached out to the APC’s public relations office via twitter for some clarification and to find out if this trend will continue across the country after the election. They are yet to comment.
