Barcelona has finally announced the acquisition of French World Champion, Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.
Despite the back and forth, with relationships turning sour between Barcelona, Griezmann and Atletico Madrid, the Catalan giants have finally landed their number one transfer target this window.
Barcelona announced via their official handle on Twitter that Griezmann has signed for the defending Laliga champions.
The French forward had been a long term target for the catalan club since the sale of Neymar Jnr. — as he was expected to sign last summer, but in a dramatic turnaround through a video documentary, Griezmann announced that he was going to remain an Atletico Madrid player. This made most of Barcelona fans (Cules as they’re well known) dislike the player because of the manner in which he turned down the club.
Those at the helm of affairs however didn’t back down on the project, as they continued to keep tabs on the 28 year old.
After the end of the 2018/2019 football season, Griezmann released another video with a confirmatory statement from Atletico Madrid stating categorically that the French star will be leaving the club for good. In the video, Griezmann clearly stated that he was already aware of his next club — all indications showing that that club will be Fc Barcelona.
Despite all the accusations and counter accusations against Barça by the President of Atletico Madrid, claiming that the Laliga Champions signed Griezmann earlier last season (thereby insinuating that €200 million should be paid as his buy out clause instead of €120 million as stated in Griezmann’s contract), the announcement from Barca has confirmed that all issues involving the two clubs and the player seem to have been laid to rest.
Barcelona stated clearly in their statement that €120 million was paid to Atletico to activate Antoine’s release clause and free him from the Los Rojiblancos.
The french forward agreed a 5 years deal with the club and has €800 million release clause laced in his contract.
