Barcelona have beyond doubts shown their superiority over Real Madrid by beating them 1-0 in Saturday’s El clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
The second El clasico in four days at the Madrid capital has seen the league’s defending champions come out tops in the two games.
Ernesto Valverde’s men earlier on Wednesday defeated Los Blancos 3-1 in second leg of the copa del rey semi final, and were odd favourites leading to their second league match against fierce rivals, Real Madrid in Laliga.
Madrid got the first real action of the game when Varane fired at goal after a freekick from Toni kroos which was blocked by Linglet, and Ter Stegen showed his presence by denying Kroos on the rebound.
However, it was the Catalan giants who broke the deadlock after 26 minutes of play. A great exchange of play between Ivan Rakitic and Sergi Roberto split the Madrid defence open.
The Croatian midfielder did excellent well to send a great shot past Courtois in goal. 1-0 it was to the league leaders.
Barcelona could’ve easily doubled their lead 13 minutes later, safe for Courtois. The World Cup GK of the year did well to deny Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi’s rebounded shot.
There was very little from Real Madrid to push for an equalizer before the end of the first half.
The second half started with Real Madrid putting in more effect to make amends as Vinicius tried to make Barcelona’s side of the net to shake. But standing on his way was a dodged Linglet, and Ter stegen in goal.
Barcelona on their own kept searching for a reassuring second goal. Lionel Messi did well to put Dembele through on goal in the 70th minute, but his shot wasn’t good enough to beat Courtois.
Santiago Solari surprisingly brought in Isco — who had been missing from Real Madrid games lately due to unknown problems with the manager and injuries — in a bid to salvage something from the game.
But it was all to no avail as Barcelona saw out a routine performance to take all three points back to Camp Nou.
It was the first time Real Madrid will be losing back to back home games in the league since January 2018.
Real Madrid remains winless in their last five games against Barcelona – who have managed to trump Los Blancos in the all time El clasico head-to-head for the first time (96 wins for Barça and 95 wins for Real Madrid).
