Chimamanda Adichie, a Nigerian author, sent an open letter to Joe Biden, the president of the United States, in The Atlantic titled “Nigeria’s Hollow Democracy”.
She criticized the American President and Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, in the letter for congratulating Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, regardless of the obvious anomalies in the electoral system.
Adichie charged that the U.S. administration had chosen stability over democracy in Africa and blasted the State Department for celebrating Tinubu despite Nigerians’ objections about the irregularities in the election.
She asserted that manipulation more than technological errors had actually jeopardized the election.
President Biden was asked by Adichie to defend the value of a “global community for democracy” and speak out in favor of justice and the rule of law.
She also challenged why the United States would support a president-elect who was chosen through an illegal process and claimed that the country’s response to the election in Nigeria was compromised and dishonest.
According to Adichie, the United States might have given stability in Africa a higher priority than democracy or might have been concentrating on containing China’s influence there.

She forewarned that encouraging undemocratic practices in Nigeria would not help Nigeria gain influence throughout Africa and might even aggravate the nation’s youth.
Recall that Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was named the winner of the 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
