A Nigerian Catholic bishop, Rev Hillary Odidi has warned his members to desist from defiling or replacing their baptismal names by taking traditional titles given to them through idolatrous practices.
He mentioned that he was saddened to know that some of his members who stand in the place of Christians also involve themselves in those traditional practices that could lead them into idolatry. This practices are clearly connected to idols, but in disguise.
He made this statement
“Sad to say, some Christians throw away their baptismal names, the names of their new lives by baptism. Some people publicly demonstrate their way of life as Christians but privately and secretly send people to carry out for them the idolatrous activities attached to their customary and traditional practices,”
He also condemned the various traditional customs connected to the worshipping of lifeless deities in Igboland which are Edo, Idemili, Ogwugwu, Ulaso, Agwu, Akwa, Ala, and Ofala because they are abomination to God
He said what he observe in particular is that some of the members under him count it not a big thing to abandon true Christianity for their divers idolatrous and sinful culture without knowing the dangers attached to it.
