I had always wondered how people fall victim to one chance operators (fraudsters) not until I recently experienced it first hand. These one chance operators are known for defrauding people by pretending to be a cab-man with passengers.
I stopped at a very popular junction in order to get a cab to my destination, I stood at the junction waiting for a cab that way going my way.
Luckily, a red Toyota car stopped in my front, “Wuse” I said signaling to the driver the direction I was heading to.
“Enter” the diver replied.
I entered the car which had three other passengers in it; a lady was sitting at the front passenger seat and two other guys were sitting at the back.
After we had moved away from my junction and was heading to wuse, one of the guys sitting at the back asked the diver to stop at a particular spot, but the diver refused saying,
“Oga na police station I go drop you ooo”
Confused at what was going on, I stared in shock at the driver who started explaining to me why he said that.
“Madam see ehh, the man carry dollars for my car boot”.
He went ahead to explain that the passenger had told him that he stole the money from his boss who was owning him six months’ salary. After hearing from the driver, the guy started to cry and promised to give us each in the car fifty thousand dollars.
The lady in the front quickly chipped in that she knows nothing was for free and asked him how much he would take in exchange for that amount of money.
” Make una just give me a hundred thousand each and we go go share the money” the guy replied.
To my utmost surprise, everyone in the car agreed to his request, after all, they would be ten times richer when the dollars are given to them.
Having heard of these fraudster’s antics and modes of operation, I asked the driver to stop the car. I immediately opened the door cause I was sitting close to it and stepped out of the car screaming “419 ooooo, One chance people ooo”.
Not waiting for people to gather around me, they drove off in speed.
I was very lucky to have escaped them because they could have taken all my life savings if I had given them the chance.
