The popular Ivorian star, DJ Arafat who died on the 12 August, 2019, following a motorcycle accident in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, has been laid to rest with celebrities, family members and fans in attendance.
DJ Arafat, whose real name was Ange Didier Houon, was if not the most popular but one of the most popular African musicians/DJs in the Francophone speaking parts of Africa , and was crowned as the ‘king’ of coupe-decale, which is an Ivorian form of dance music.
Arafat whose bike collided with a car in the Angre neighborhood on Sunday, 11 August 2019 and was admitted to a hospital for skull fracture, but never made it.
He was given a private funeral but it was everything but private as it looked more of a state funeral. The president of Ivory Coast in his remarks called DJ Arafat a Youth Icon and ambassador of Ivorian music and culture. Celebrities across Africa and world were in attendance. The likes of former Chelsea attacker Diede Drogba, Artiste David Adeleke, (Davido) and many others all came to mourn the star Arafat and bid him farewell. Fans and fellow country men and women in their thousands showed up at his funeral to show their sympathy as well as solidarity to, the once talented and shining DJ of our time .
With the song Jonathan released in 2003 which catapulted him to the lame light, DJ Arafat won Best African Artist in 2012 at the pan-African Kora Music Awards and also won artist of the year in the Coupe-Decale Awards of 2016 and 2017.
He leaves behind five children and other family members.
