Lionel Messi scored one penalty and missed another, as an uninspiring Barcelona side won 1-0 on the night against Real Valladolid.
Barça’s only goal of the night came in the 42nd minute after they quickly turned defence into attack.
They were on the verge of conceding a goal but Valladolid bulged, and within a twinkle of an eye, Lionel Messi was on the other end trying to score via a counter attack. His effort was blocked by Valladolid’s inspired GK, Masip, but Pique was there at the right time trying to pick up the loose ball before winning a penalty for the camp nou side.
Lionel Messi stepped up and tucked in his 22nd Laliga goal (30th in all competitions) of the season.
It was the 20th consecutive home league game in which Barcelona have gone ahead to score a goal– somewhat, turning Camp Nou to a fortress– they’ve averaged three goals per match in that period, whilst winning 15, drawing 4 and losing just 1 of those games.
The match continued in a rather uninteresting fashion with Barcelona missing several clear cut chances and Valladolid barely creating at all to try and steal a point.
Rather, it was Barcelona’s former player and current Real Valladolid’s GK, Masip who put on a show on the night to deny Ernesto Valverde’s men from scoring a basket of goals.
With six minutes of regulation time to play, Barça were awarded another penalty. In a bid to get his second of the night and secure victory for Barça, Messi stepped up again but flopped miserably as Masip handled the Argentine’s penalty comfortably.
1-0 it ended as Barcelona increased their lead in the league to nine points, pending Real Madrid’s result against Girona on Sunday.
Gerard Pique, who won his 300th cap for Barcelona on the night, granted an interview saying Barcelona will have to do much more better if they are to get anything meaningful from their upcoming Champions League game against Olympique Lyon.
