However, there have been persistent rumors that consuming garri can lead to blindness.

In this blog post, we will delve into the truth behind this myth and shed light on the importance of properly processed garri in maintaining good health.

Dispelling the Myth:

Aproko Doctor, a renowned medical expert, eloquently debunks this popular misconception.

He explained that the notion that drinking garri automatically leads to blindness is unfounded. The key lies in the processing of garri, as its preparation can either eliminate or retain small amounts of cyanide.

Understanding the Risks:

When cassava is not properly processed, it contains naturally occurring cyanide compounds that can be harmful to human health.

Consumption of poorly processed garri over a prolonged period can result in various health complications, including macular degeneration, hypothyroidism, and impaired kidney and pancreatic functions.

These effects are not limited to eyesight alone but can impact the overall well-being of an individual.

The Importance of Proper Processing:

Dr. Aproko Doctor emphasizes that the risk associated with garri consumption primarily arises when it is processed inadequately.

The crucial step in garri production is the removal of cyanide compounds, which can be achieved through thorough processing techniques.

When garri is processed using traditional methods involving fermentation, soaking, and thorough drying, the cyanide content is significantly reduced or eliminated entirely.

Quality Control:

To ensure the safety of garri, it is essential to purchase it from reliable sources. Dr. Aproko Doctor warns against buying garri from unscrupulous vendors who do not adhere to proper processing methods.

Such garri may still contain harmful levels of cyanide and pose a potential risk to one’s health. Therefore, it is crucial to obtain garri from trusted suppliers who prioritize quality control.

Maintaining a Balanced Diet:

While garri can be a nutritious part of a balanced diet, it should not be relied upon as the sole source of nutrition.

A well-rounded diet comprising diverse food groups, including fruits, vegetables, proteins, and carbohydrates, is vital for overall health.

Garri should be consumed in moderation, complemented by other nutrient-rich foods, the popular online Doctor said.

The Importance of Hydration:

Dr. Aproko Doctor concludes his message by emphasizing the importance of hydration.

Garri is typically consumed by soaking it in water before consumption, and it is essential to drink an adequate amount of water while enjoying this delicious Nigerian delicacy. Staying hydrated supports proper digestion and overall well-being.

The belief that garri automatically leads to blindness is a myth that can be debunked through proper understanding and processing techniques.

His post on Twitter reads;

Who told Nigerians that drinking garri automatically means going blind? If it’s processed properly, garri will not affect your eyesight. If you constantly take garri that’s poorly processed, it can contain small amounts of cyanide that can reduce oxygen supply to your eyes, causing severe macular degeneration. But it won’t just affect the eyes alone. It can get to the thyroid, it can lead to hypothyroidism.”

He added that;

Your kidneys and pancreas, too, might be affected as it can reduce insulin production. This insulin is what regulates your blood sugar. So except you buy garri from wicked people who do not pass the cassava through ALL the processes to properly remove cyanide. It can be poisonous. But the chances are slim. However, properly processed garri will NOT affect your eyesight. Don’t forget to drink water.”

As Dr. Aproko has explained, the key lies in consuming properly processed garri from reputable sources. With this knowledge, Nigerians can continue to enjoy their beloved garri while maintaining good health.

So go ahead, relish your garri, but remember to drink water and maintain a balanced diet for a healthy lifestyle!
