Real Madrid started their league campaign in fine fettle thanks to goals from Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez to record a 3-1 win away against Celta Vigo.
Zinedine Zidane who was without injured Eden Hazard, set up his team in the old 4-4-2 formation and gave want away Gareth Bale a start while James Rodriguez was an unused substitute.
Karim Benzema opened scoring for the Los Blancos in the 12th minute, after Gareth Bale ran brilliantly down the flank to set up the French man.
Celta Vigo thought they had scored an equalizer with just a minute left in the first half after capitalizing on poor defensive output from Odriozola.
But the Referee cancelled out Denis Suarez’s goal after replays showed that Iago Aspas had received a pass from offside positon before setting up Denis.
The second half started with things looking bad for Zidane’s men. First, Luka Modric was involved in a silly infringement on Denis Suarez which resulted into the Croatian captain receiving his matching orders from the referee– who consulted VAR before dishing out the red card.
With Real a man down, Celta almost capitalized on it immediately had Courtois not mustered a great save to deny Araujo’s header from close range.
Toni Kroos pulled off a belter from long range to put Real Madrid 2-0 up just a minute after Karim Benzema had rattled Celta’s woodwork.
In the 80th minute, Second half substitute, Lucas Vazquez put the icing on Real’s cake with their third goal.
Celta could only get a consolatory goal in the 91st minute from 18 year old youth player, Iker Losada Aragunde to end the game 3-1.
