Real Madrid ended their winless run against Club Brugge with a disciplined display in their last UCL group game to earn a 3-1 win at Jan Breydel Stadium.
Real Madrid needed second half goals from Brazilian teenagers Rodrygo Goes, Vinicius Jnr and Luka Modric to end their three games winless run against the Belgian side.
Brugge, who filed out an all African attack of Pacy Tau and Dennis Bonaventure had the first chance on goal in the tenth minute through South African attacker, Pacy Tau, who tested Areola’s response with his tap in.
Real got their own opportunity minutes later when Casemiro dispossessed Balanta, and the ball got to Vinicius Jnr who put Luka Jovic through on goal but his shot was tipped over by Mignolet.
Dennis Bonaventure thought he had given the home side the lead just before half time, but it was chalked off after VAR showed Pacy Tau was in an offside position leading to the attack.
A fiesty first forty-five minutes of football ended goalless as both sides failed to take charge of the game.
Real started off the second half with more dorminant display, and it wasn’t long until it paid off.
Luka Modric put Odriozola through at the right flank with a lovely pass, his resulting cross was deflected to Rodrygo Goes who took a one-time volley to beat Mignolet in goal, breaking the deadlock.
Just two minutes after restarting the match, Club Brugge replied the Spanish giants with an equalizer.
Capitalizing on Los Blancos’ defensive lapse, Nigerian attacker, Dennis Bonaventure set up a free Vanaken who calmly curled the ball to the back of the net.
Real however restored their lead in the 64th minute. Luka Jovic headed the ball in the box to Rodrygo, he struggled to get a shot in but the ball fell perfected for Vinicius Jnr.
The home side made efforts to rescue a point from the game but Luka Modric dashed their hopes by reassuring Zinedine Zidane and Real a first win against the Belgian side.
The Croatian midfielder latched onto Casemiro’s pass from outside the box to cap off Real’s efforts on the night.
The win however had no significance in their Champions League group as Paris Saint-Germain (who beat Galatasaray 5-0 on the night) had already secured top spot in Group A.
While Club Brugge drop into Europa League with Real Madrid finishing runners up.
