Barcelona’s sporting director, Eric Abidal has confirmed that the club has begun talks to renew the contract of their star player, Lionel Messi.
The Argentine forward has already been involved in eight different contract extensions with the Catalan club since 2005, and a ninth extension is now looking more likely than less likely.
Messi’s last contract renewal was two years ago (2017), when he renewed with the Laliga champions till 2021 and his release clause set at 700 million euros.
Also laced in that contract is a clause with allows the 32-year old to leave the Catalan giants for free from next summer but Eric Abidal in his interview with SPORT, revealed that negotiations have kick started for Messi to renew.
“For us, he’s (Lionel Messi) a key player. He has an option to leave in his contract, but I know that the president is speaking with his representatives to close the case once and for all.”
The club director went further to relay his desire and that of the club, to have Messi tied down for the rest of his career.
“I hope he stays here for many more years and I believe that he will. It will be Leo’s decision. And, as he says, Barça before anything else. He’s the best.”
