Real Madrid started the new year with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Getafe thanks to Varane who was the protagonist in the first two goals and Luka Modric.
Real Madrid visited the Coliseum Alfonso Perez where they faced neighbours, Getafe in their first game of 2020.
Despite being the better side in the first half, Getafe saw themselves go a goal down in the 35th minute when Ferland Mendy sent in a right footed cross which was met by Raphael Varane for Los Blancos.
The goal was later judged to have come off Getafe’s goal keeper and ruled as an own goal by David Soria.
The Madrid derby match also saw Belgian goal keeper, Thibaut Courtois produce three spectacular saves in the first half to maintain his side’s front foot in the game.
The second half saw Varane jump highest in the 53rd minute to head in a Toni Kroos set peice for 2-0.
This time around, not even VAR could deny the French captain a goal.
Gareth Bale should’ve made it three in the 65th minute when Varane sent a tailored long pass to the Welsh man, and he tried to dink the goal keeper from outside the box but the ball didn’t get the right projectile force to beat David Soria in goal.
The closing minutes of the game saw Real Madrid turn defense into attack from Mendy to Gareth Bale who teed a through ball to Valverde on a counter.
The Uruguayan explosive midfield maintained his composure and speed before passing the ball to Luka Modric for a tap in.
The win will come as an improvement and breathe of fresh air for Zinedine Zidane’s side as they ended 2019 with a string of three draws in the league.
Real Madrid go two points clear at the top of the league pending result of the Catalan (Espanyol vs Barcelona) derby to be played later.
