The young and talented Valverde was awarded Man Of The Match award in the Spanish Super Cup final despite receiving a red card.
Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid 4-1 on penalties to lift the Spanish Super cup, and Federico Valverde’s late tackle on Alvaro Morata turned out to be the most important moment of the match.
Los Blancos and Roji Blancos were inseparable after full-time, playing out a goalless draw.
With both sides failing to make the most of their chances, the game went into extra time.
Atletico Madrid had the chance to steal the trophy at its death when Morata was played through on goal, but the explosive midfielder chased down the Spaniard and eventually tackled him down from behind.
Centre referee wasted no time in sending him off, but the 21 year-old has been receiving countless plaudits for the professional foul, with many describing it as a title winning moment.
When quizzed on the infringement, the Uruguayan had this to say:
“I apologise to Alvaro Morata. I know it’s not good what I did but I didn’t have any other option.
My companions congratulated me when I left the field. I’m going to be a dad. I’ve got some really nice things going on and you have to enjoy them.”
The very remorseful Valverde admitted to it being a bad tackle, but he did what he had to do for his side.
“I did it for the team, i couldn’t do anything else. I said i am sorry. I am very happy for the title but i have that thorn because what i did was wrong.
Atletico Manager, Diego Simeone was also full of prais for the young lad as he prevented his side earning their first win against Zidane’s Real Madrid in a final.
“Fede’s red card probably added points to his MVP award because he won the match with his red card.
It was the most important piece of play, it was probably going to be a goal. Fede won the game. I told him that he did what he had to do at that moment. Now we’ll see how many games he’s suspended for.”
