Anthony Martial and Scot McTominay got on the scoresheet to earn United a resounding 2-0 win against their City rivals.
Despite winning their last five games in all competitions which included a cup triumph and victory against Real Madrid, City were left puzzled by a United side still struggling to make it into champions league spot in the league.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer welcomed captain, Harry Maguire to his side while his counterpart, Pep Guardiola, gave nod to young star Phil Foden in Kevin De Bruyne’s absence.
City should’ve gone on the front foot when Raheem Sterling sent a curled shot on goal had De Gea not parried the ball well.
Daniel James tested Ederson in goal at the other end with a low strike, and the Brazilian goal keeper was equal to the task.
Both sides looked evenly matched with end to end football, but it was the Red devils who created more clear cut chances and eventually broke the deadlock.
Bruno Fernandez flicked on United’s freekick to a waiting Anthony Martial, and the forward calmly tucked in the ball with a low volley to break the deadlock.
The French man also scored United’s winner against City at the Etihad in December.
After the first forty-five minutes, moments of individual brilliance earned Manchester United the lead.
Second half started with Manchester City hoping to have equalized through Sergio Aguero, but the lineman ruled it offside.
The growing pressure on Pep saw him introduce Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus to add to their attacking force.
In the 72nd minute, Daniel James put his pace to good use but he chose to power a shot straight at Ederson in goal over passing to an open Bruno Fernandez.
City continued to press heavily for an equalizer, with Mahrez at the heart of it all but United remained compact and repelled every effort.
However, it was United’s second half substitute, Scot McTominay who produced a sensational strike in stoppage time to secure United a league double against their fierce neighbours.
