Real Madrid have been eliminated from Copa Del Rey after they were hammered 3-4 by Real Sociedad in a thrilling encounter.
A first half Martin Ødegaard strike, a brace from Alexander Isak and one goal from Merino in the second half helped bundle Real Madrid out of The Spanish King’s Cup.
The game started on a bad note for Santiago Bernabeu faithfuls when their own player on loan at Sociedad netted the first goal in the 22nd minute.
Madrid’s goalkeeper, Areola had done well to parry Isak’s initial shot, but Ødegaard latched onto the rebound to put his side in front.
Zinedine Zidane’s men failed to grab an equalizer before half time despite having a good number of chances, including that of Ramos hitting the woodwork.
In the second half, things got even worse for the in-form Los Blancos as Alexander Isak brought on his A-game to grab a brace after 56th minutes.
The Laliga leaders were thought to have initiated a possible come back when Marcelo struck from near post to pull one back.
But La Real dashed that hope before it even developed when Isak found a free Merino in the box for 1-4.
Vinicius Jnr thought he had grabbed Real’s second of the night with 80 minutes gone when he headed past Remiro but the goal was ruled out for offside.
But instead, it was second half substitute, Rodrygo Goes who eventually made the game 2-4 a minute later.
Vinicius Jnr was the architect as he found his way through La Real’s defence before laying the ball on a plate for Rodrygo.
As extra time kicked in, things got wild at the Bernabeu– Karim Benzema looped a 93rd minute cross to Nacho who headed the ball home for 3-4.
La Real got reduced to 10 men, with their defender receiving his second yellow and matching orders, as the game went down the wires.
But it was however too late for The Whites to grab anything tangible from the game as Sociedad had outclassed them in their own backyard.
THIS IS REAL!
