Chelsea on Thursday morning announced the signing of Mateo Kovacic on loan from Real Madrid, as part of the deal to take Thibaut Courtois to La Liga.

According to the club’s official website, the Croatian midfielder puts pen to paper on a season-long loan deal.

Chelsea’s report does not confirm if the Blues hold an option to buy the player permanently or not, but it is believed that no such clause has been added to the deal.

Real Madrid offered the player to the Blues as part of the deal for Courtois in an attempt to sweeten the deal.

Speaking about his move to Stamford Bridge, Kovacic expressed his excitement about the chance to play in the Premier League.

“I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling. I will try to do my best for this club. It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season,” he told the club website.

A host of clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, had been linked with moves for Kovacic this summer when it became clear he could leave Madrid, but Chelsea have won the race to sign the Croatian.
