Ighalo, Iwobi inspire Nigeria to victory over Cameroon, secure quarter final spot
The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday afternoon knocked the defending champions, Cameroon out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations [AFCON] with a 3-2 victory in Alexandria.
Two quickfire goals from Ighalo and Iwobi inspired the Super Eagles to overturn Cameroon two quickfire goals as well.
The Eagles had their first chance to score just 12 minutes into the game after a Cameroonian defender faltered, Simon’s intended onslaught was truncated and it was cleared to corner kick.
19 minutes on, Ighalo notched in his second of the tournament. He pounced on a loose ball in the 18-yard box and his well-taken effort hits the back of the net.
The Shanghai Greenland Shenhua star bounced on the ball with a left footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner, assisted by Kenneth Omeruo following a set piece situation.
With just 5 minutes to half time, Stéphane Bahoken pulled Cameroon back on level terms. He scored with a right footed shot from the centre of the box to the high centre of the goal.
3 minutes later, Cameroon took the lead. Clinton N’Jie with a right footed shot from the centre of the box to the centre of the goal to make the scoreline 2-1, assisted by Stéphane Bahoken with a headed pass.
63 minutes into the game, Ahmed Musa put Ighalo through and he strikes a left footed shot from the centre of the box to the centre of the goal to restore parity for the Eagles.
3 minutes later, Alex Iwobi restored the lead for Super Eagles. Ighalo with a through ball to the Arsenal man, who made no mistake to finish off and give Nigeria a 3-2 lead.
A brilliant performance from the Super Eagles as back to back goals from Ighalo and Iwobi in a space of 2 minutes helped the Eagles secure victory and send Cameroon packing.
