Iyorchia Ayu has formally resigned as the Peoples Democratic Party’s leader.
Days before to Mr. Ayu’s decision, a federal judge had mandated his temporary resignation from office until the resolution of several political issues that had recently engulfed the main opposition party.
Despite vehement opposition from Governor Nyesom Wike and other southern governors who followed the party line, Mr. Ayu persisted and fought for months to hold onto his job.
Iliya Umar Damagum, has taken over in that role as the interim national head of the main opposition party in Nigeria.
