The two current Premier League titans gave us a teaser to the 2019/2020 season as they locked horns on a very Sunny day at Wembley and it was Manchester City who successfully defended their title in a penalty shoot out with a 5-4 victory.
In a sloppy and yet stellar first half to the FA Community Shield tie it was Manchester City who got the first goal of the day in the 12th minutes as the former Liverpool man Raheem Sterling converted from close range from a well worked free kick routine from a foul which saw Leroy Sane pick up an injury that might see him out for a couple of months or weeks.
The only Liverpool player who had actually troubled the Manchester City defence and Claudio Bravo was Mohammed Salah but failed to convert two self made opportunities and kept the score at 1-0 at half time.
A new rule of awarding Coaches disciplinary cards were used in the 42nd minute as a yellow card was shown to Pep Guardiola for harshly contesting for a card to be shown to Joe Gomez for for a stamp on David Silva.
With a better second half performance from Liverpool and Salah attempting 8 of Liverpool’s 14 shots they were rewarded in the 77th minute as Joel Matip also converted from close range header similar to Manchester City’s goal a cross in from Jordan Henderson picked out Van Dijk who sent the ball back to the center from which Matip rose to the occasion and headed home the equalizer to ensure the game ended 1-1 and a winner would be decided in a penalty shoot out. It’s Joel Matips 4th goal for Liverpool with 3 of those being headers.
Manchester City’s goalkeeper Claudio Bravo made the save from a Georginio Wijnaldum penalty as City converted 5 out of 5 of their penalties to give them back to back FA Community Shield Victories.
