He is among the few notable politicians in Rivers State that has experienced robust, systematic and steady rise in the political horizon over the years.
As loyal, committed Party faithful and political strategist, Amb. Akawor, rose from grassroot to a global diplomatic pedigree as former Nigeria Ambassador to South Korea where he held sway for over eight years carving a nitch as Prime Ambassador of African Ambassadors due to his enviable record of competence and administrative prowess.
Chief Akawor is a quite Achiever and devout Christian who has positively affected the lives of many.
Amb. Desmond Akawor, JP, was born on December 1, 1964 to the family of late Eze and Lolo Jackson Akawor of Egberu Ndoki in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State into the Akawor Royal Lineage of Egberu dynasty.
As it is said; charity must necessarily begin at home and a good politician must have a base and stronghold. So is Chief Akawor, the undisputed political juggernaut in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.
His influence spreads beyond the Ndoki people of Abia, Akwa Ibom and Rivers State in particular and Nigeria as a whole.
He enjoys the love, respect and confidence of the people because of his simplistic, generous and service minded disposition.
He started his educational career at State Primary School Egberu Ndoki and completed at Community Primary School, Okoloma.
Therefore he proceeded to Ndoki Community Secondary School Obohia Ndoki between 1974-1979.
Akawor obtained HND in Metallurgical Engineering at Federal Polytechnic Idah 1988. He later bagged MBA in Project Management.
He is now pursuing Masters in Public Administration degree at Claude Ake School of Government, Port Harcourt.
This is in addition to various certificates and International Courses/Conferences to broaden his knowledge and improve his skill in management and project implementation.
Some of the International Conferences include Maritime Security, Abuja in July 2004, Pre-Award phase in Project Management, San Franciso USA, New Development in Port Engineering, in Antwerp Belgium in October, 2004.

His work experience is versed and cut across both the private and public sectors.
His brief stints as Industrial Trainee (IT) with Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Port Harcourt Refinery between August and September, 1984 as Plant Inspector of pressure vessels, boilers, tanker, pipe works, heater, listing equipment and pressure valves was inspiring.
Between 1987 and 1988, Akawor worked with the Project Development Institute (PRODA) Enugu as Foundry Technologist in charge of Metal Casting Operations.
In 1988, he got another job and rose to the rank of Commercial Manager with First Aluminum Nig. Plc, Port Harcourt saddled with the responsibility to superintend over sales, Marketing, Production, Planning and Administration of the company until 1997 when he was appointed the Honourable Commissioner of Water Resources and Rural Development by Rtd. Col. Musa Sheik Shehu, Military Administrator, Rivers state on June 1997.
During his tenure as Commissioner, Amb. Desmond Akawor introduced the Rural and Neighbourhood water schemes; an aggressive policy frame work towards providing water projects in every Local Government Areas and all communities in the state which open up the rural areas to other developmental projects.
President Obasanjo through the recommendation of Dr. Sir Peter Odili appointed him the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Niger Delta Basin Development Authority (NDBDA) in August 1999 to October 2003.
His scope of work were Management, Rural Development, Floor and Erosion Control in core Niger Delta Region of Nigeria; i.e Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Delta States. Already familiar with the terrain of his new responsibility, Amb. Desmond Akawor took off in grand style by initiating gigantic water supply project networks across the region including Egberu water scheme, Marihu water scheme and Obeama water projects and flood control projects in Rivers, Bayelsa in other States.
Engr. Akawor next point of call was the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) where he brought in his wealth of experience in revamping the ailing establishment as the Executive Director in Charge of Engineering and Technical Service; comprising five departments of Sea view Properties Ltd.
As the Executive Director, he superintended the Engineering and Technical Services for the day to day running of the Authority; all land leases and other properties of NPA at Abuja.
Chief Desmond Akawor was later recommended by Dr. Sir Peter Odili to be appointed Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja by the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
On assumption of office as President, late President Musa Yar’dua appointed him an Ambassador to South Korea, where he served as Diplomat representing Nigeria in that country for over eight (8) years. Amb. Akawor is a man with accumulated political experience and exposure.
He was the State Chairman of Obasanjo Solidarity Forum (OSF), State Patron of the Grand Alliance, Rivers State Chapter, Patron Oyigbo for Odili/Obasanjo Return (OFOR) campaign, Co-ordinator Sir (Dr.) Peter Odili Campaign Organization, Director-General, Nyesom Wike Campaign Organization in 2015, Member Rivers Elders Committee, a Justice of Peace and Member of the then Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Port Harcourt, Governing Council.
He delivered the mandate of Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike by ensuring that he won the 2015 Governorship election as the Executive Governor of Rivers State in his capacity as the Director-General of Wike Campaign organization as well as the 2019 gubernatorial election.
He is a Director-General that has delivered back-to-back.
His Excellency, Amb. Desmond Akawor is married to Her Excellency Mrs. Ene Akawor with four lovely children: namely Harold, Raphael, Daniel and Deborah.
His hobbies include reading, golf and tennis. He is keen supporter of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
