About a week ago, Rivers State capital “PORT HARCOURT” witnessed one of the worst floods in its history. For over a week now, the heavens keep pouring down more rain and as it stands, this great nightmare will obviously get worse if some corrective measures are not taking.
Areas like Rupuokwu, Elepokwudu Mbuchi, around/inside Cheruke Hotel and Eneka were all affected and drenched.
As the rain keeps pouring down heavily everyday, residents are seen panicking and lamenting over the massive flood that has taken over their homes and the effect of all these could be disastrous. As at the time of this report, the rain is yet to stop.
However, the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), has terminated the contracts of 20 de-silting contractors under its body due to the flood that have caused havoc in the state recently.
The Sole Administrator of RIWAMA, Chief Felix Obuah, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt.

He stated that the decision to relieve the contractors of their jobs was reached after a meeting with them recently.
“The sacking, which is with immediate effect, became necessary due to the lukewarm attitude of the de-silting contractors to their job and which is no longer tolerable by the agency.
“The Rivers State Waste Management Agency can no longer allow the contractors continue to flout its directives with impunity,” the statement read.
“That same stubbornness of the contractors is partly responsible for the regrettable flooding being recorded in parts of the state for which the governor, Chief Nyesom Wike is very disturbed.”
