NYSC camp has opened my eyes to how backwards alot of Nigerian youth are in their mind especially. I will give examples.
So one of the first few days, I went to join the ever long line to fetch water. Some boys were just ahead of me in the line and several buckets were behind me in no time. As usual, some people just dropped their buckets and went to get food or do something else
So whenever the line moved, everyone would move their bucket and if you are nice, you would move even the buckets whose owners aren’t there because they are on the line yeah? I just wanted the line to be moving.
So I was just moving every bucket ahead of me and even behind me because I wanted things to simply move along so I can be going. I did notice that the boys in front of me were not helping with the buckets behind them.
Anyways, we started talking and I asked the boy why he wasn’t helping the people behind him move their buckets. Not like it was his obligation, I was just curious. And this was his answer “I cannot help a girl move her bucket”
I was like, I didn’t see that answer coming. So I smiled and asked him if that was the reason he wasn’t helping and he proceeded to tell me how they don’t serve women where he is from (Rivers State), he even said “this is how they will be behaving in their husband’s houses”
The stupid thing is, he had no way of knowing that everyone behind him was a girl but because he knew a few girls were behind him, he decided not to help because “he cannot serve a woman”. This is a graduate in 2018. Common sense is obviously not common.
Another instance happened yesterday when I heard a conversation between some boys. I say boys because men are wise, boys are not. Apparently one guy was explaining to his peers how the prayers of a virgin are immediately answered by God. It was the most bizarre thing
These boys were literally sitting there and eating up all that bs. What does virginity have to do with prayers? Did Mary pray to be the bearer of our Savior? Virginity does not take people to heaven either.
Is it good to wait until marriage? Absolutely. But trust me your virginity doesn’t move God. The Bible reminds us that our righteousness are like filthy rags before Him. He answers your prayers because of Jesus, not because of you.
There are different points for fetching water in camp yeah; one is close to boys hostel/kitchen and one is close to girls hostel. I went to fetch water at the one close to boys hostel because the line there was less. I was waiting my turn when a boy came and said
“why are girls coming to fetch water here?” like the tap was exclusively for boys. Btw, boys come to fetch water around our hostel too so his condescending tone was unnecessary. I just responded with “I don’t understand, we should not fetch water?” or something like that
I just know I was blunt and straightforward. He was shocked that I responded and he just shut up and left. I am sure he probably thinks “this one will disrespect her husband” but that’s his business tbh.
I can’t count how many times I have had to explain to people that being from Taraba doesn’t make me Hausa; how Hausa is not necessarily a tribe and how I can be fair and not igbo. It’s exhausting.
During SAED today, one girl called the boys learning makeup “Bobriskys”. If that is not the height of foolishness, I don’t know what is.
Should I talk about how they found poop on the bathroom floor? Like a fully grown woman who has graduated a tertiary institution decided to defecate in the bathroom. I have heard it’s worse in other camps sef.
