Reactions have trailed the signing of the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract (PSC), Amendment bill which was signed by President Muhammad Buhari while on a private visit in the UK as Nigerians sees it as sidelining and undermining the office of the Vice President.
President Buhari traveled to London after his visit to Saudi Arabia on Saturday where he spent five days on an official trip, and proceeded to travel to the UK till the 18th of November.
President Buhari who announced through a tweet on his official Twitter handle, @MBuhari the signing of the amendment to the Deep Offshore Act.
Nigerians react to this new development as in the past President Buhari had allowed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to act as president even when he is to spend fewer days away, which gives the Vice president authority to handle serious decision making in governance.
Also while President Buhari was on foreign trips or medical vacations in London, his Deputy resumes the duty of an acting president following the transmission of letters to the National Assembly in line with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution.
The section reads:
“Whenever the President transmits to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives a written declaration that he is proceeding on vacation or that he is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary such functions shall be discharged by the Vice-President as Acting President.”
However, some concerned Nigerians, politicians and activists alike have spoken up stating that something wasn’t adding up, and also that the fact that the president signed a bill while abroad sends the wrong signal that the Vice president has been sidelined and wouldn’t be allowed to take up serious decision making.
Also “The action doesn’t give a picture of a good working relationship between the president and the vice president, since the president is right in making a declaration handing over the reigns of authority to his Vice before embarking on his trip outside the coast of Nigeria.
The social media platform also had a filled day as Nigerians reacts over such action by the president to his Deputy.
