The just concluded 2019 general elections has been greeted with mixed reactions and it seems like the fight was between the Southerners and the Northerners in Nigeria.
The re-elected presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari won the election with over 15 million.
Out of pride, the Northerners, who pulled majority of votes took to twitter with the hashtags #IAMNORTH, #NORTH and #NORTHERNERS to express joy over the victory.
The hashtags became an avenue for them to express their ego as they claim that they are the decision makers of the country.
However, a twitter user, also a northerner, identified as Aliyu Dahiru Aliyu (@Aliyussufiy) took to his twitter page to disagree with his colleagues and charged them to note that, the population of the North should not only be used during elections.
Aliyu stated that the North has the highest of poverty rate and (western) illiteracy.
Adding that they need to be able to solve their problems.
His tweets reads:
“That #IAMNorth and tweets to defend the #Northerners that are in abyss of poverty and higher rate of (western) illiteracy are all nonsense if we can’t solve our problems. we must tell ourselves some bitter truth. Our population shouldn’t be only useful during elections”
Here are some of tweets hitvibz gathered:
There is no doubt that the population of that region could be cited as a strength, it is huge enough to boost the economy.
In that case, the people should be able to contribute meaningfully to the economy by producing goods and services, thereby reducing importation and also going into mechanized farming to have enough for exportation.
There is no developed country in the world that succeeded without the country’s human capital, which obviously is something the North and Nigeria has.
More focus should be on how to use that human capital in the development of the country rather than using it for elections.
