Real Madrid closed the gap between them, league leaders, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid by defeating Deportivo Alaves 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Karim Benzema continued his recently found form in front of goal when he opened scoring for Los Blancos, recording his sixth goal in his last four games for the Spanish giants.
The match looked evenly contested from then onwards till the end of the first half, but Real Madrid looked like the side more likely to get a reassuring goal.
The second half saw Alaves pressing the Santiago Solari side for an equalizer, but had a determined Real Madrid defence, and Courtois to contend with.
Karim Benzema got subbed off with 15 minutes of regular time to play with a standing ovation from the impressed Bernabeu fans (obviously they were happy to see their top striking back in top form — recording his 10th league goal of the season, unlike the previous season, where he could only manage 5 goals). He was subbed on for Mariano who has had little impact for Madrid this season.
The game lingered on until second half substitute, Marco Asensio, found Vinicius Jnr free, with a good pass, and the dazzling starlet made no mistake in finding the back of the net for Real’s second.
Los Blancos rounded off a good performance when Odriozola sent an inch perfect cross to Mariano, who said “thank you” by converting with an audacious flying header which went past a helpless Pacheco in goal. Three goals to the good, and a pleasant way to sign off the weekend for Madrid faithfuls.
The win meant that Solari’s side had reduced Barcelona’s deficit to eight points after Barça could only manage a draw against Valencia . They also went two points off City rivals, Atletico Madrid, who lost earlier on Sunday afternoon, to Real Betis, thanks to a penalty goal by Sergio Canales.
