River state Governor, Nyesom Wike on Tuesday declared curfew on some areas in the state, following this directives some personnel of the River state Police command have arrested over 50 persons for flouting the order, while task force officials destroy goods of fruit traders, in order to enforce the imposed curfew and ensure that the people comply.
A Facebook user identified as Happiness Thompson shared pictures of destroyed fruits at a market in Port Harcourt, as the River state task force officials punished those who flouted the stay at home rule.
She further lamented that the task force officials’ behavior was mean and inhumane, owing to the fact that these traders being force to stay at home live on debts and they have to make ends meet as they are not salary earners.
According to media reports, some part of the market was been smoked with tear gas, in order to chase away people who were still selling, as this goes against the rules of the lock down.
A Twitter user identified Adiela Nwosu also reported via his page that some men of the Police force were seen harassing people on the streets of Mile 1 in Port Harcourt and about 50 persons have been arrested.
He beckons on the Governor of the state to call to order the men of the police force and as well check on their actions during the lock down period.
According to another Twitter user, Magnifique also reported that at Ikwere road, some Soldiers were seen mal-handling residents who came out in search of what to eat.
Social media has been buzzing with reactions over the ill treatment of the fruit traders and residents in the state, stating that it was not fair for them to treat people as such, rather, the officers should have found other means to enact the rule.
