Religion really has done some good in our society but looking at it on a balance scale it really has done more harm than good. Sometimes the things that are good in religion are the things that makes it harmful.
Almost everyone in the world today belongs to one religion or the other, whether it’s Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Atheism or Traditional practices. People like to identify themselves with a particular system of belief of a super natural being. Religion goes so far back in human history that it is probably safe to say that religion has always existed.
According to Dictionary.com Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
Since the days of old, man has always practiced religion as different tribes had/have their own gods. These tribes became towns and cities through agriculture and constantly improved technology and those gods and beliefs were taught to their children and so on. Some philosophers argued that religion is more of a discipline agent for people to act morally and in a bit to prevent lawlessness in the society. I cannot say I agree with this statement but many of the things that religion provides were beneficial when civilization was less advanced; Today however, they do more harm than good.
Religion has created a form of division among the human race. Many people who practice religion have this belief of “we are the true religion and they are not practicing the true religion”. As the human population grew it was no longer tribe against tribe but religion against religion. As technology advanced, the zealots now have the tools to threaten all those who do not believe in their own religion.
There is no denying that millions of people have died because of religion, one religious group killing people of another religious group. One group of the same religious beliefs fighting with another group of the same religious beliefs, e.g, Catholics vs. Protestants, Shites Muslims vs. other Muslims.
Religion has made a lot of believers’ side blinded to critical thinking, in the sense that many decided to be blinded to logical thinking e.g, you have a religious institution tell you that transfer of blood to your body system whenever it needed, perhaps after one has gone through an accident and lost a lot of blood. Surprisingly these believers abide by their rule, they actually refuse to get a blood transfer to save their life.
Religion has become a money-making machine for most of these religious institution, especially churches. There have been a lot of debate whether there should be things like seed sowing in the churches. Most churches these are open just for business purposes now a day, they focus on extorting money from their poor congregation while they own cars, properties and private jet.
I do believe that there is something supernatural about the world but however its important to note that religion is not a do or die affair, one should not kill in the name of religion in fact one should not kill at all. If we practice religion the right way, we will have it do more good than harm.
