The cracks have started to show on the Galaxy Fold.
In the excitement and with many of us dreaming of owning the Galaxy fold and experiencing the phone of the future; First impressions were excellent as almost all online reviewers spoke with one voice praising the flagship phone, that is if i can still call it that.
This got me thinking what were reviewers doing to break the phones all around the same time they received them all for almost the same reason. The culprit, the pre installed SCREEN PROTECTOR!Reviewers: According to one reviewer, they noticed the screen protector was a little more glued than usual for smart phones with pre installed screen protectors. The whole screen turned black for a split second whilst he was doing this then the screen started flicking.
Another type of potential break that was mentioned was anytime type of physical damage to the screen or the soft layer plastic protector could result in the screen spilling its ink. This could be a tiny spill on one area of the phone screen but can quickly spread across the entire display.
This is probably not what you would want to see happen to your brand new smart phone, not forgetting the amount you paid for it should be enough to take a chunk out of anyone’s calm demeanor.
Warning: As people posted on twitter the damages their phones suffered, there was a twitter user posted a picture with the what seemed to be a warning on the screen protector. This read:
The main screen includes a special protective layer.
Peeling off the protective later or using any adhesives on the main screen such as protectors or stickers, may cause damage
Samsung issued out a statement:
A limited number of early galaxy fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.
Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top later of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesive to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.
Delays: In addition to the statement they Samsung was quick to announced that it would halt world wide release and sale until it fixes the issue with the screen protection. In order words they were taking measures to strengthen the screen so you folks do go breaking it again. A new release date is expected to be announced in a few weeks. In hindsight Samsung and foldable smart phone makers would learn from this, a step in the right direction as we look forward more sophisticated smart foldable phones free from screen issues like these.
Word of advise do not peel the protective layer/film on the inside screen of your Samsung Galaxy fold.
