South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi, won the recently concluded Miss Universe 2019 beating about 100 contestants from different countries to claim the crown.
Zozibini Tunzi is the first black Miss Universe for eight years now. She came out on top after she was in the top three with Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Mexico, and the top two with Miss Puerto Rico, in the event which was hosted in New York City, USA.
After she was declared the winner, she gave a very inspiring winning speech, stating that she wants to empower kids that look like her.
“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me with my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered to be beautiful and I think that it is time that stops today. I want children to look at me and see their faces reflected in mine”
This is a big win not just for South Africa but the whole of Africa, in recent years black girls in pageantries seems to always lose out to the world standard of beauty which is fair looks and long straight hair, this is the beginning of a new story for black women.
