A Nigerian doctor on Twitter – Aproko Doctor has taken to the social media platform to reveal reasons why it is very dangerous to give honey to babies or children below one year.
According to the popular doctor, Honey sometimes contain harmful bacteria that produces toxins that can cause muscle weakness, paralysis and breathing problems in babies.
He said Honey can be contaminated by the spores of this bacteria and they grow into bacteria in the intestine and release toxins that can lead to paralysis, which usually affect babies less than 6 months, and its caused by Clostridium.
Doctor Aproko wrote on his Twitter page saying;
Babies or children below one year have NO business with honey. I don’t care if you were there when the honey was shitting the honey out. STOP IT!
Some give honey to bless the baby during naming ceremony so the baby’s life will be “sweet”. Stop giving babies honey
Here’s why
Sometimes honey can contain a harmful bacteria that produces toxins that can cause muscle weakness, paralysis and breathing problems in babies. Don’t give honey to children under one year of age
The issue is this, no one might suspect the honey is the cause, because its “natural”.

This usually affects babies less than 6 months, and is caused by Clostridium. The condition is called infant botulism. Honey can be contaminated by the spores of this bacteria and they grow into bacteria in the intestine and release toxins that can lead to paralysis.
Why does it affect babies under one year?
This is because in adults and older children, there are natural defenses in our intestines that prevent these spores from germinating into bacteria. Babies don’t have this.
To prevent this, do not feed honey to babies under one year.
