Ekiti state Governor, Ayodele Peter Fayose has stated that the greatest honour anyone can bestow on MKO Abiola is total respect for the rule of law and conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

The Ekiti state Governor stated this after President Muhammadu Buhari directed on Wednesday that the nation’s Democracy Day will, henceforth, hold on June 12 of every year as against the current arrangement where the ceremony holds on May 29.

The President also resolved to honour the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, with the highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic.

Fayose took to his twitter official handle to say that his state honoured Abiola with a public holiday on June 12, 2017 and we will do it again this year.

The Governor further stressed that MKO Abiola is worthy to be honoured.

His tweet reads;

“MKO Abiola is worthy to be honoured and we in Ekiti honoured him with a public holiday on June 12, 2017, we will do it again this year.However,  the greatest honour anyone can bestow on MKO Abiola is total respect for the rule of law and conduct of free,fair & credible elections.

The Governor also noted that honouring late MKO Abiola is a good development even if laced with political motives. He urged President Buhari to also declare late Abiola as winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

“Honouring MKO Abiola posthumously is a good development even if laced with political motives. Since it appears unconstitutional to confer such an honour on an individual who has never been President of Nigeria, it is necessary for MKO Abiola to be declared President. President Buhari should go the extra mile and declare late MKO Abiola as winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. That is the only “right and legitimate step to take”. I hope that our President will also remember that he pronounced the renaming of Federal University,  Oye Ekiti after late General Adeyinka Adebayo since last year?  Even after writing letters reminding the President,  nothing has been done,” Fayose tweeted.
