The new ‘AirPods 2’ not what we expected.
Remember many years ago when apple launched the wired earphones and it became a trend for young people to walk around with wires handing out from their eyes.. Well that seems to be slowly fading out into the old tech history books, and soon would be considered ancient by some kids born recently –Generation Z.Apple has taken a step further with the air-pods wireless earphones. Or have they? So much buzz on twitter about the sound quality and the awesomeness of the Gen2 airpods. This led me to wonder if it is just the hype by Apple fan boys as nothing they mentioned corresponded with Apple’s release notes about what to expect with the new airpods. In fact it seems they only released it to cover up for something else and by something else I mean the fact that the highly anticipated all purpose wireless charging mat was no longer going to be a thing. Sad Apple so sad…
Although the first generation airpods made waves against other brands of wireless earphones like the Samsung or Sony or Bose or Beats by Dre with its slick designs and suitable one size fits all or should I say almost all. And the price was reasonable at the time customers thought.Personally I do not have the ears for in-ear earphones I prefer head phones they are more comfortable to wear and do not fall off when there a sudden head movement.
To begin with, there is very little physical difference between the air-pods and airpods2. Around the back the only noticeable difference is the metal on the hinge on the back of the generation 2 is now chrome colour and no longer black. Apple did not offer any other colours as they stuck with the branded white. In fact you are not able to tell the difference between them looking from a distance and at some point I happen to mix both Gen1 and Gen2 airpods and was only able to tell them apart by looking at the model numbers under the airpods.
Previously on the first generation airpods, to activate siri you needed to tap on either one of the airpods whilst wearing but with the Gen 2 comes the hey siri voice activation option for the airpods –which is a welcome feature away from the tapping the airpods which to me seems a little odd in situations were you might be moving or using both your hands, the last thing you want to do is tap your airpod and loose concentration or balance. So voice activating siri sounds better.I have tried the new Air-pods and there was no difference in clarity or improvement in sound quality. Apple did not say anything about them sounding better. There were rumors that Apple’s tweaks to the AirPods’ internal design would supposedly improve the bass but like myself, multiple reviews also reached the same conclusion as I did. No Bass. Apple The buttons are still on the same sides and no difference in pressure when clicking. No change to the charging port location as it is still on the bottom of the case but you do get a wireless charging option built into the Gen2 case.
With a Brand new H1 chip and the Bluetooth 5.0 for a better range. Upon testing on an open clear park area I was able to get between a 150-160 feet before the connection starts jittering. Testing in areas with trees and buildings the connection was able to make about a 100 – 120 feet before I noticed the audio breaking. So not bad apple.
Side not you do need to be on the latest iOS 12.2 to run the new generation airpods.I did not get to do a water test but guys don’t leave your airpods in the washing machine please.
In a nut shell what do you get with the Gen2 airpods?
- Wireless charging case
- Slightly better connection speed
- Hey Siri Voice activation
All for $40 more than you will pay for the Gen1 airpods. In the words of Missy Elliot “Is it worth it, let me work it.”
