As a lot of people go on today to celebrate valentine with their lovers, friends and family members, I’m sure they think that flowers, candy, red hearts and romance is what Valentine’s day is all about, but maybe that is not what it is all about.

History has it that Saint Valentine was a Rome Catholic priest of the 3rd century AD, who lived during the reign of Claudius Gothicus and defied the order of the emperor Claudius by secretly performing christian weddings for couples so that the husbands wouldn’t have to go to war, for it was a law that during the time of war, the single men were to be at the war front. it was said that soldiers were sparse at this time so this was a big inconvenience to the emperor.

Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies by the Judge Asterius against command of Emperor Claudius. While under house arrest of Judge Asterius, and discussing his faith with him, the judge challenged Valentine to restore the sight of his adopted blind daughter. Valentine, praying to God, laid his hands on her eyes and the child’s vision was restored. Immediately humbled, the judge and entire household were baptized and became Christians.

Saint Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage. He was killed on the 14 of February 3rd Century and was buried on the Via Flaminia. After his death, he became a Christian martyr and was made a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Julius the first reportedly built a basilica over his grave.
There is a story that says that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius’ daughter, which were “from your Valentine.”
A few centuries later babies toddlers children teenagers young adults matured adults religious and non religious across all race and creed all around the world have taken to different social media platform to share in the spirit of Valentine.
