Rivers State government demotes 14 principals of government secondary schools across the state and also withdraws licenses of 24 Private schools affected by WAEC ban.WAEC Ban: Rivers govt withdraws licenses of affected Schools, demotes principals

The move by the State Government is in response to the West African Examinations Council, WAEC circular that blacklisted 35 secondary schools in the state for examination misconduct.

Kaniye Ebeku, the State Commissioner for Education, responded to the development on Tuesday by saying that principals of the affected schools have been barred from taking part in any WAEC exams.

The impacted principals were invited and told of the government’s decision, according to Ebeku, who also noted that the state government has disciplinary actions for exam malpractice.

The principals of the 14 government schools have been demoted, and the operating licences of the implicated private schools have been revoked, according to him.

He pointed out that in the past, the state government had penalised defaulting teachers, and that WAEC is aware that the state Ministry of Education frowns on exam misconduct.

We have directed that For all principals who are still in service and who superintended during the time the situation arose we direct that they be demoted. For all private schools that are found in the list, we have directed that their licenses to operate be withdrawn forthwith,” he said.
