Zinedine Zidane was quite critical of Video assistant referees after his side beat Al Jazira UAE 1-2 in the Club World Cup semi-final, thanks to a late Gareth Bale goal.
In yesterday’s game, A first-half header from Casemiro was ruled out after VAR showed Karim Benzema in an offside position. However, his influence on play was debatable.
Zidane had this to say during his post-match press conference;
“The first-half was very strange because it was very odd how we didn’t score.
“But we had patience and we knew we were going to have chances. We have qualified in a way that was deserved. We had to have peace of mind and we won after a bit of struggle, but we won.
“We had to wait three or four minutes to get a decision and it wasn’t pleasant.
“You have to make sure some good comes from all of this and that we try to improve it. I guess the offside was why it was disallowed. It seemed odd.”
He also expressed his happiness on Gareth Bale’s influence;
“I’m happy for him and so is he, as he came on and made the difference. It is a deserved result. In the first half, it didn’t want to go in for us and we can’t explain because we had so many chances but didn’t score.”
It was a bit strange to have seen Real Madrid go behind despite dominating the match so much. The Frenchman admitted it was a strange situation;
“Yes, we suffered, but that happens in football. Sometimes, it doesn’t want to go in and you have to play despite this from time to time. It was a complicated game for us. Now we have to think about the final.”
Zidane also said he knows little about Saturday’s opponents, Gremio.
“I watched their semi-final,” he added.
“I don’t know the Brazilian league that well.
“They’re a good team and we have to raise our level of play.
“It will be a tough game because there is no such thing as an easy match, as we have seen against Al-Jazira. Now, we have to rest.”
Real Madrid will face Brazilian outfit, Gremio in Saturday’s Club World Cup final, in a bid to retain their title.
