The federal government has released N2.5billion for the repair of the bad section of the Eleme-Onne axis of the East West Road.
This came days after youths decided to block the major road in Rivers State to protest over the poor condition of the road.
The federal government also released N2.5billion for compensation to property owners along the road.
Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godwill Akpabio at a meeting with management of RCC, explained that a 4.9 billion naira compensation had been paid earlier.
Akpabio, however pleaded with the Niger Delta youths to quit the protest and leave the section 3 of the East-West road to enable the contractors start work immediately.
He also directed that repair works on that road should begin today.
“The essence of this protest is to draw the attention of the government to the road and now we have come, so allow us to start work,” he said.
