During the tenth National Assembly, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Kalu, announced on Tuesday that it was his turn to preside over the Senate as president.
The representative of the Abia North Senatorial District requested at a press conference at the National Assembly that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), should zone the seat to his region.
The ex-Abia governor said;
“It is my turn to become the Senate President. If I’m elected Senate President, I will be team Nigeria. I’m going to work in every corner of Nigeria.”
Orji Kalu added that;
“I schooled in Maiduguri, Borno State. I started my business in Lagos and spread it across all state capitals. My first name will be team Nigeria, my last name will be team Nigeria.”
Kalu asserted that he is the highest ranked Senator from the South East and that, as Chief Whip of the ninth Senate, he is entitled to the post.
“Remember, I’m the only former governor who has never changed phone lines for more than 20 years. I’m still willing to maintain that telephone number to answer all my calls. I’m not going to switch off my phones because I’m Senate President.” – he said
Stressing that;
“I’m hoping that Nigerians will pray for me to become Senate President because it’s my turn.”
The destination of the 10th Assembly’s National Assembly leadership positions has not yet been officially recognized by the APC.

In the meantime, it’s unclear at this time whether the 10th Senate’s current president, Ahmad Lawan, would run for re-election.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Sani Musa, and Senator Jubril Barau are among the newly elected federal lawmakers who have unofficially expressed interest in contending for leadership roles in the National Assembly.
Whether Senate President Ahmad Lawan will run for the top spot in the 10th Senate is unclear at this time.
Dave Umahi, a senator-elect as well, is a candidate for Senate President.
