The suspension of Twitter operations in the country has been overturned by the federal government, months after it began a crackdown on the social media platform.FG lifts Twitter suspension finally after more than six-month clampdown

The restriction was lifted after Twitter committed to establish “a legal entity in Nigeria during the first quarter of 2022,” according to Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, director-general of the National Information Technology Development Agency.

Abdullahi led the Nigerian delegation that met with Twitter to negotiate.

Apart from opening offices in Nigeria, Twitter has also promised to pay appropriate taxes and “appoint a designated country representative to interact with Nigerian authorities,” according to the Nigerian government.

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January 2022,” Abdullahi said.

Adding that;

The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim.”
