A new National Language Policy that makes mother tongue a required medium of instruction in primary schools has been authorized by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).FG approves mother tongue as compulsory language of instruction in schools

The Minister of Education – Adamu Adamu, revealed this when he briefed reporters on the conclusions of the council meeting that President Muhammadu Buhari presided over in Abuja on November 30.

He disclosed that the mother tongue will be employed strictly for the first six years of education (Primary one to Primary six) and then blended with English from junior secondary school while stating that the government is aware that implementation will be challenging.

Even if the policy has been put into place, in his opinion, it cannot be completely executed until the government creates instructional materials and has access to trained teachers.

According to him, each school will utilize the language that is most often spoken in the neighborhood where it is located as the mother tongue.

The minister claimed that the government is taking this action to preserve cultures and their unique quirks, pointing out how much has been lost as a result of some local languages going extinct.

He gave the Nigerian people the assurance that all of the country’s nearly 600 languages will be handled equally.
