The result still keep Rivers side well well for top of the NPFL table as dem dey prepare for some tough away matches.
After the match, Finidi George talk say dem know from start say the game no go easy, especially because Bendel Insurance sabi perform well for away matches.
“Na very good game for us. We know say Bendel Insurance dey very, very strong for away games. We know say the match go tough, but we tell the boys make dem continue to push.
“For first half, I think say we get one or two chances to score but e no work. For second half we try calm them down.
“Make dem continue dey keep the ball and the chances go surely come. For second half, the chances begin dey come well well and we begin dey score.”
First half end without goal before Rivers United finally find their rhythm for second half.
Chijioke Mbaoma open scoring for 53rd minute when he head ball enter net from Iyowuna Douglas corner kick. Later, Wisdom Samuel add the second goal with clean finish from another Douglas assist.
The Benin side try come back late when dem score one goal for 89th minute.
But substitute Samson Obi quickly restore the two-goal lead as he tap in rebound after Seyi Oguntayo powerful shot hit the woodwork.
For Rivers United, the win get extra meaning because na the same attacking players wey score for their 3–0 win against El Kanemi Warriors still deliver the goals again.
Finidi say nothing don change despite Rivers United goal rush
Even with the sudden increase in goals, Finidi still insist say nothing don really change for the coaching side.
“I think say the players now believe say dem fit really score. For us as coaches, we never change our coaching method; we still dey do all our scoring drills.
E never work for us until the last match. Now we happy say chances dey come and we dey score.”
“Nothing don change. The work rate still be the same. Na just say now luck dey our side more and we dey score goals. Na that one dey make the difference.”
The United coach believe say confidence and persistence don finally start to turn into goals after many weeks where the team dey win matches 1–0 earlier for the season.
Even though he happy with the result, the former Nigeria national football team coach also talk say he small vex during one tense moment late for the game when Insurance begin increase pressure.
“I feel say for one point we begin play sloppy small. Pressure begin come. I feel say for that time we no suppose dey try build play from back when pressure dey. We try correct am but dem still dey do am.
“I vex small and na that one lead to the build-up wey bring their goal. E be like say we dey invite dem make dem put more pressure on us, and I no like that. So I vex for some of the players, but na normal thing.
“We move on. Na part of wetin dey happen for the pitch. After the game we talk for dressing room and everything don settle.”
Even with that late scare, the victory still make Rivers United collect another important three points for home.
“Na happy day for us, but na just one match. We go continue to take am one game at a time. Now we dey go play away. We get four matches outside, so we go see wetin go happen.”
The Port Harcourt club now don shift focus to tough away fixtures, starting with trips to Shooting Stars and Ikorodu City as dem dey try maintain their position for top of the NPFL table.
