Rivers athletes are heading to Gateway Games 2024 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with one mission—to dominate the medals table.
The Rivers State government has unveiled a record-breaking reward system to motivate its athletes, aiming to leave no doubt about their determination to conquer the National Sports Festival, Hitvibz reports.
In a powerful show of support, the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), approved unprecedented bonuses for medal winners at Gateway Games 2024.

Before the contingent departed for Abeokuta on Thursday, the bonuses were officially announced at a farewell ceremony held at the University of Port Harcourt training camp.
Gold medallists will pocket ₦2 million, silver winners ₦1 million, and bronze achievers ₦500,000—a motivational package never seen before in the state’s sports festival history.
“Rivers State believes in you. His Excellency is investing in your victory because you represent the pride, strength, and future of our state,” said Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, who represented the Sole Administrator at the event.
“This is the most generous reward scheme in Nigeria—now go out there, dominate the competition, and bring glory to Rivers State! You’ve trained hard; now it’s time to shine. Be champions on the field and ambassadors of excellence.”
Gateway Games 2024: Rivers Backs Athletes with Bold Investment
Acting Head of Service, Dr Mrs Inyingi S. I. Brown, also stated this confidence, encouraging the athletes to aim high in every competition they enter.
“No other state is offering what Rivers State is giving you. This is your time—go out and claim your victory,” she declared.
The atmosphere was filled with hope and determination as over 400 Rivers athletes were given a clear mandate: raise the state’s flag high in Abeokuta and bring home the medals.
Director of Sports, Ibigoni Benjamin Akubo, confirmed that the athletes are well-prepared for the challenge ahead and eager to make their mark at Gateway Games 2024.
