The collation of the governorship election results in Abia and Enugu states has been put on hold, according to a statement from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).INEC halts collation of results in Abia, Enugu states, cites violence

The Commission claimed that thugs broke into their office in the Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia state in a statement by Barrister Festus Okoye.

In addition, Barrister Festus Okoye disclosed that INEC officials had been taken captive in connection with the collation of local government area results.

Part of the statement reads;

It will be recalled that our office in Obingwa Local Government Area was invaded by thugs yesterday, Sunday 19th March 2023, and our officials held hostage in relation to the collation of results from the Local Government Area. Similarly, reports from Enugu State call for a review of the results for the Governorship election from the two outstanding Local Government Areas of Nsukka and Nkanu East.”

As a result, the Commission put a stop to the results’ collation in the Obingwa LGA of Abia State and the Nsukka and Nkanu East LGAs of Enugu State.

A review will be conducted before the procedure is finished, according to INEC, and a timetable for the resumption of the results collation was not given.

They pleaded for patience from the candidates, parties, and voters in the affected States because this procedure would also postpone the declaration of the election results in those States.
