Rivers United head coach Finidi George don raise fresh concern about the shortage of quality strikers for Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Rivers United Oga Finidi George Believe Say Better Squad Fit Deliver NPFL Title

The Pride of Rivers nearly win the NPFL title last season but dem finish second behind Rangers International after a painful one-point gap on the final day of the campaign.

As the 2026/27 season dey approach, Finidi believe say the squad stronger pass last season, thanks to new additions and tougher competition across different departments, especially among the goalkeepers.

For interview with AIT Sports journalist Peter Abaje, Finidi talk say him team get every reason to believe say dem fit do better this season.

“If you check every department well, I think say we better pass how we be last season.

“So we dey very, very optimistic say we go do better than last season. I dey always talk say second position no bad, but team like Rivers United always dey aim to win the league, so this time around we go push well-well for the title.”

Despite the confidence around the squad, Finidi admit say finding quality strikers don become serious challenge because many of the best goalscorers for the league dey quickly move abroad once better opportunities show.

“To find strikers no easy at all for Africa. One of the highest goalscorers from last season don already move go Tanzania, where dem dey pay am better because of the 14 or 15 goals wey e score last season.

“We want sign those kind strikers, but dem dey go elsewhere because other countries too dey look for strikers.”

The former Super Eagles coach believe say the steady movement of top forwards out of the NPFL don make am harder for clubs to strengthen their attack.

Even with that challenge, di Port Harcourt team still dey focused on mounting another strong NPFL title challenge and also hope say dem go perform better for CAF Champions League after their group-stage exit last season.
