Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) officials took action on Tuesday and demolished an illegal market known as “Kasuwan Dare,” which had been suspected of sheltering hoodlums and drug dealers in Asokoro, Abuja.
The market, located on Hassan Musa Katsina Street near Kpaduma II in Asokoro Extension, Abuja, had been causing concerns among residents and passersby due to its association with criminal activities.
According to Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of the Department of Development Control, the market posed a threat to the safety of the area’s inhabitants and those who traveled through it.
Despite the FCT Administration’s continuous efforts to cleanse the region, it had transformed into a hub for unlawful actions.
Galadima further elaborated that the miscreants operating in the vicinity had a negative impact on the overall aesthetics of the environment.
He emphasized that this situation could not be allowed to persist, given the security risks posed by the presence of criminals, drug dealers, and other underworld figures.
“The operation aims to eliminate the hoodlums and drug dealers that have taken control of the area,” Galadima stated.
He recounted that attempts had been made to demolish the market on three occasions previously, only to have it rebuilt and the undesirable activities resume.
However, this time, the demolished market would remain dismantled.
Galadima explained that this action was necessary to revitalize the area and restore its visual appeal.
He also noted that this move aligned with the current administration’s efforts to enhance the city’s cleanliness and safety, and this marked the commencement of that endeavor.
Mr. Peter Olumuji, the Secretary of FCTA Command and Control, assured residents that measures would be implemented to ensure their safety in the area.
In response to the operation, Mr. Bitrus Yakubu, the Village Head of Kpaduma, expressed his appreciation for the FCT Administration’s intervention.
He commended their actions in removing hoodlums from the area and stated that the community was delighted with the clearance of the region.
The illegal market had been in existence for over two decades, but its removal was seen as a positive development for the community’s welfare.
