Governor Nyesom Wike has urged the federal government to tackle illegal oil bunkering in the same way it effectively addresses insurgency, saying that the health of Rivers people is his business.
Wike made the announcement during a meeting with traditional rulers at Government House’s Banquet Hall in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Illegal oil bunkering, he claims, is a kind of economic sabotage that should not be taken lightly.
He noted that it is the Federal government’s responsibility to put an end to the threat, which has wreaked havoc on the state’s environment and citizens’ well-being.
The governor slammed the APC-led federal government for being insensitive towards the pandemic and the harm it is causing to the state’s citizens.
He stated that no one from the central government has approached him about the matter, and that the health of his people is his first priority.
“I should think that the way the federal government intends to fight insurgency, is the way they should fight illegal oil bunkering, because it is a sabotage on the national economy. Very big sabotage. It affects our own revenue. It is the responsibility of the Federal Government to see how this thing can be stopped. As I speak to you, nobody has called me from the Federal Government to say how they can support us,” Wike said.
He added;
“But that is not my business. My business is the health of my people. I will not because the federal government is not interested to stop it, therefore my people should die. If everybody dies, who are you going to govern.”
