These animal skins are being offered as edible animal skin product to the general public.

The animal skins were collected on grounds of being treated with chemicals for use in the leather industry but are being sold as food, according to a statement from the commission.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC, has issued a public health warning to the general public, particularly kpomo consumers, about the actions of some fraudulent business people and traders who sell the industrial animal skins as food.

She stated that huge quantities of the products (120 tons) were confiscated at six separate places, and that seven persons who are suspected of being involved in the conduct are currently being investigated.

The NAFDAC chief went on to say that samples of the products had been sent to a lab for testing in order to determine their quality and unwholesomeness.

The action, she claims, will aid the agency in dealing with the interaction and risks related with the usage of these items.

Although the countries from where they were smuggled in are still unknown but NAFDAC has announced the arrest of seven suspects.
