The Orazi gas explosion in Rivers State has left devastating consequences, but the government is stepping up to ensure that the victims receive the support they desperately need.
As lives remain at risk, the state’s leadership has made it clear that no effort will be spared in providing relief to the affected families, Hitvibz reports.
Rivers government’s continued support for victims of the Orazi gas explosion
On January 8, 2024, Rivers State Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, visited the victims at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt, accompanied by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh.
The Deputy Governor emphasised the commitment of the Governor Fubara Administration to offer ongoing support to the victims, noting that their welfare is a top priority.
Prof. Odu described the explosion as a “tragic disaster” and assured that the government will continue to assist those affected.
Despite the loss of three lives, she highlighted the significant progress made by medical staff in treating burn victims, with some showing signs of recovery.
Patients who were previously unresponsive are now beginning to open their eyes and speak again, marking a hopeful turn in their treatment.
Support for victims: Government’s plans for additional assistance
During the visit, the Deputy Governor confirmed that the Health Commissioner would report back to the Governor to request additional resources, including medication and supplies, to continue supporting the hospital’s efforts.
The state government is also exploring ways to alleviate the financial burden on the affected families.
In a statement of gratitude, Prof. Odu acknowledged the tireless efforts of the medical teams and expressed appreciation for the timely intervention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, who played a key role in rescuing the victims.
The Deputy Governor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing long-term support for the victims and their families, with a focus on reducing their suffering.
“It is a very sad thing. It is a great disaster, but we will not fold our hands and watch people die; we must thank the hospital, the commissioner for health, and the entire team; they have been working round the clock to ensure that they save lives,” the deputy governor said.
